

I started out as an artist with painting, and I always loved music. I didn't start writing until I was in my 20s. Finally, at this point, I've come into my own. My mother always said I was a late bloomer, and it seems like my time is now. That didn't happen until I was much older. How did you discover you had a unique way with words? Ahead, we welcome Harjo to "The Wisdom Corner" to reflect on how her own work grounds her in times of uncertainty. She's also written a memoir, Crazy Brave( another, Poet Warrior, is on its way this fall), and has penned a number of plays and children's books, and produced seven albums as an accomplished musician and saxophonist. Harjo's latest project as Laureate features a collection of works by over 40 Native poets across the country. It came out of the need for social justice, for human rights." "I started writing poetry out of that to give voice to what was going on and what we were up against.
